Hello, I'm running a gma950 core 2 duo macbook with 2GB ram. Even as I type this, every app, the dock... everything, will freeze for 6-12 seconds and color-wheel. At such a time, only the mouse and hotcorners work. I can apple-tab through programs but all are non-responsive. These freeze periods seem to come in waves... with about 4 seconds of downtime between each freeze, and 8+ freezes at a time. I have restarted my computer several times, and am wondering how to diagnose and fix this. Could it be a problem with hardware such as my drive? Would erasing my hard drive and installing 10.6 fix it? Nothing too important on here (not that it's unable to be used anyway) but it's obviously annoying. This is the only computer I have available. Thanks.
No, repairing permissions isn't necessary nor does it fix anything. Perhaps you need to reduce the number of applications you have open concurrently. You have the bare minimum of free space on your hard drive. You could replace it with a larger, faster drive.

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.

Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

Applejack For Mac Os X 10.10.10 7
- Vers 7.0.1 completely stops my MacBook Pro and shows the dreaded spinning color wheel. I turned on my Activity Monitor and have traced the 'time out' to Firefox. Not a plugin, per se, but to Firefox.
I have NEVER had this problem before this upgrade. I turned OFF the syncing, thinking that could be the problem (I had been notified several times - 10? - that the syncing server wasn't working properly, so I thought of it).
Any suggestions how to stop this. TOTALLY annoying. Happens ever few minutes even when I have the browser open but am working in other programs.
It takes more than 100% of my CPU usage.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

Set to Mac App Store and identified developers. Leaving it to Anywhere is not advised. You can always select to install if it's a legitimate app.
I would disable all your plugins and extensions in your browsers. If the problem goes away, add back one at a time and make sure they are fully updated.
Are you still using a Blackberry. Their software is still running.
Make sure Flash is fully updated. Even with it set to automatic it often fails to update. I suggest you also turn it off and see if there is an improvement. many sites will use HTML5 if Flash is not installed. Install YouTube5 Safari extension - When I log onto my macbood pro all it displays is the spinning mulit-colored wheel for a while and then comes right back to the log on frame.Time to visit an Apple repair station.
27' i7 iMac (Mid 2011) refurb, OS X Yo (10.10.1), Mavs, ML & SL, G4 450 MP w/10.5 & 9.2.2 - This matter has been bothering me for many years now. I wonder if and how many Kuler users are actually aware of this, but the Adobe Kuler color wheel is spatially based on some perceptual color theory and harmony, and not the color wheel for technical color systems and settings.
For example the primary colors in the typically and technically triangle of RGB or CMY are not to be found in a perfect 120 degrees angle in the Adobe Kuler color wheel.
This is the RGB theme of 0, 120 and 240 degrees in Hue values, spread across the Adobe Kuler color wheel:
As you can see in the above picture, Adobe gracefully 'bends' the space between the values to accommodate for the Kuler color wheel, which follows color theory and harmony. (No wonder Adobe Kuler is reluctant to reveal the advanced value settings of these colors...)
But it's not even similar to the distribution of colors in the Active Color panel of Illustrator.
The green looks similar to the one in the Kuler wheel, but the blue has shifted once again !
To remind you, below, an indication of the Apple color wheel interpretation of RGB:
Finally, there's even a clearer indication of the mismatch between these color wheels.
You can see the technically 0, 90, 180, 270, and 360 degrees setting for the hue value, but it's not at all the exact cross hair you'd expect:
As you can see, what used to be a quarter (90 degrees) in a technically correct RGB distribution of colors in the Apple color wheel, accounts for almost half of the Kuler wheel, while enormously truncating the differences between red and purple.
Due to the same difference, the so called 'harmonious' effect of complimentary colors (which are supposed to be exact opposites), or triads (which are supposed to be spread 120 degrees apart from each other) falls to the ground when the spreading of the colors on the wheel seems purely arbitrary. One can only wonder which wheel is the correct one...
So when picking colors together with other designers, be sure to settle on a unanimous color wheel (Adobe Kuler, Illustrator, or Apple), before you start throwing your mentally creative darts at it...
I wish Kuler (and other Adobe popular applications) would at least warn for these differences, or let you pick a preferred color wheel.Hi,
Regarding 3rd party backup software, it is recommended to seek help in their official website for better understanding.
For backup issues, we could use the built-in Windows backup. We could do a date backup or an image backup using Windows Backup and Restore.
Detailed information for the backup and restore in Windows 7, we could check the below link:
Backup and Restore
And here is a similar thread:
Which backup software please?

Over the last few days, when I try to execute a File Open command from Adobe Acrobat or Office 365 programs (even from an innocuous location such as Documents), I get the spinning rainbow wheel for long periods of time (10 seconds to minutes) before I am able to select a file to open. I copied messages from Console after a File Open command for each of Adobe Acrobat and Excel (the selected location was Documents), given below:

Can anyone give me an idea of what these messages mean and how I can solve this problem?
If I'm not in the correct Community for this question, could someone kindly tell me where I should re-post?
Thanks.
David WalkerYes; I have previously connected to an iMac at this location using File Sharing. However, in my attempts to solve this problem last week, I had already unchecked File Sharing in System Preferences. Tonight, I also deleted the folder from the window in the File Sharing System Preferences page, then rebooted. The problem still persists.
I try not open files across a server line, i.e., I try always to copy a file to the local computer and open it there. I may have gotten careless and tried to open a file from the Windows server with either or both Acrobat and Office 365. Although this was an SMB share, is it possible that these programs are now trying to connect to the Windows server on a File Open?
I had about decided to quit chasing this problem; we spend about two weeks every two months at this Boston location, and I'll be returning to my Florida home this weekend. So I decided I would see what the situation was when I returned to my native habitat, although I may be chasing this problem again in our trip to the Boston area in April.
The other thing I wondered (I guess I can't quite let it go), is whether there is a command line in Terminal that would kill all AFP shares.
In any case, thanks for your help; you're very knowledgeable. - I recently uploaded photos to iPhoto and after getting a non-stop color wheel for a ~400 pic upload broke it into 2. After the first of the 2 I clicked on the event to open the pics and was greeted with a color wheel and 'not responding'.
Ever since, whenever I open iPhoto I just get a color wheel immediately when I move the mouse.
How can I fix this without loosing my pics.
Thank you.Back up all data.
Quit iPhoto if it's running. Force quit if necessary.
In the Finder, temporarily move the iPhoto library (usually located in the Pictures folder) to the Desktop. Relaunch the application. It should prompt you to select a library. Click the Create New... button. If a new, empty library is created successfully, try adding an image, such as one downloaded from the web.
After the above test, quit iPhoto again and put the original library back where it was, overwriting the test library. Post your results. - My imac keeps giving me a spinning color wheel when i open and close applications and also when I am typing in programs. It happens and spins and then releases. I have done the following: Run virus software and found no problems, I have reinstalled the operating system, I have reloaded Iworks software, I have checked system prefrerences and still the problem continues. What could the problem be and how can I correct the problem?'the spinning wait cursor is displayed automatically by the window server when an application cannot handle all of the events it receives. If an application does not respond for about 2 to 4 seconds, the spinning wait cursor appears.'
read how to troubleshoot: http://www.macworld.com/article/151583/2010/05/spinningbeachballofdeath.html - Whenever I'm using Firefox my browser pauses every few seconds and if I am typing something nothing comes out, or the color wheel comes out (I'm on a Mac), if I'm watching a video it pauses every few seconds... it's sort of maddening. I do have about 20 tabs open at a time, I don't know if that is what causes it. It doesn't seem to happen when I am in Safari.'the spinning wait cursor is displayed automatically by the window server when an application cannot handle all of the events it receives. If an application does not respond for about 2 to 4 seconds, the spinning wait cursor appears.'
read how to troubleshoot: http://www.macworld.com/article/151583/2010/05/spinningbeachballofdeath.html - Whenever I try to use my iMac after it's been idle for a few minutes there is a 3-5 second delay while the color wheel spins. This happens in all programs. I have deleted the plist power settings and all sleep options and processor options have been tried to no avail. The mouse remains responsive and I can move the cursor but whenever I click or try to execute any operations the color wheel appears.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
iMac G5 rev B Mac OS X (10.4.4)Thanks, but no Norton installed. It gets a little stranger; I reinstalled the system software with an archive and save. Now I still get the delay after the computer is idle for a few minutes, but I no longer get the color wheel. Example, if I start iTunes and then wait about 2-3 minutes when I hit play the play button turns blue but it takes several seconds before the song plays. Before I reinstalled I would have the same delay only I would get the color wheel. - I have an iMac. , mid 2007. Frequently, when I take an action, the little color wheel starts spinning and goes on for quite awhile. Save a file, close a file, open a file, open a window, it's all random. Somtimes it stalls, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes long, sometims short. Why is this happening?Consider adding more memory. Be sure you have adequate free space on the hard drive - 15 GBs or 10% of the drive's capacity, whichever is greater. Do not run too many applications concurrently. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on resolving the SBBOD.
Do some maintenance:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say 'Verified' then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is 'Verified' then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior. Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
Carbon Copy Cloner
Data Backup
Deja Vu
SuperDuper!
SyncTwoFolders
Synk Pro
Synk Standard
Tri-Backup

Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space. - Ever since last night, my Macbook Pro (purchased in September of 2009), has been incredibly slow. I noticed it first while trying to browse the web. Out of nowhere, while doing things, like browsing Facebook, that I could normally do easily and without incident, the color wheel/beach ball/rainbow wheel/etc. would appear for what felt like an eternity, and for seemingly no reason whatsoever. Firefox was the only application I had running, and there was nothing excessive being done. After several more instances in the next few minutes, I tried my luck with Safari. Same result. Then, I realized it wasn't just confined to web browsing. Even trying to open a Finder window would cause the color wheel to come up. Every simple action that used to take mere milliseconds to complete now can take up to 5 minutes to unfreeze. After I finally managed to get my laptop to recognize the external hard drive I plugged in so that I could try and use Time Machine to back up the more than 200 gigabytes that occupy my dying hard drive, the back up failed after an hour. This may or may not be related, as I noticed that the icon for the external hard drive no longer showed on my desktop. I have scanned my computer using a virus scanner obtained from the App Store a year or two ago. Nothing turned up. Finally, I have tried both restarting and shutting down my computer, yet all that that has shown me is that start-up is now a laborous process as well. For the first time, it showed me a loading bar under the gray Apple logo that remained empty for a few minutes, until it finally disappeared entirely and the operating system booted up. My attempt at entering Safe Mode on startup also failed, leaving me with nothing but a white screen that forced me to manually shut down my computer and give up in desperation. I'm planning on taking my Macbook to the Apple Store to see what can be done before irreparable damage is inflicted to my hard drive, because I value many of the files that have been added since my last back up several months ago. If any of you have had similar problems or have any idea what is going on, please let me know. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
DannyIt sounds like either data corruption, malware, bad sectors on the drive (moved it while it's opearating? a no-no) or the drive is possibly failing.
I'll give you a bunch of links and you decide what you want to do.
Apple is just going to charge you to replace the drive and not save your data.
If you want to recover your data and can't fix things yourself, take the machine to a local Mac repair shop as it's rather simple to replace the drive and Apple might not have one for a older SATA using machine aslo they specialize in data recovery efforts also. Apple doesn't.
You also can replace the drive yourself too.

Does anyone have this problem my iMac is going to be about a 1 1/2 year old now and the fan is constantly running and never shuts off. This happened from day one took it back to Apple store when first notice the problem which was 1 week later. They told me it was nothing and all iMacs run the fan and do not get to much concern. He did something like unplugging the cord and pressing the power button 2 times holding down for 10 sec each time he said had to reset pram or something like that. It went away for a day and came back tried his procedure and works once or twice and back come on the fan all day. But when in sleep mode goes off. But when on you can feel the air out of back coming out. Is thee anyway to stop it someone told me maybe the motherboard was going or the ram was bad but the Apple tech was I think honest with me he said they have these issue's and there is really nothing to do with the fan noise. The computer is not hot at all to touch and he told me thats when I really have to worry then if it feels hot to touch then shut it down and wait till next day to turn back on. I do not know what to make out with this issue. Anyone know of a fix for this that I can do? There is nothing blocking the computer is wide open only have a cable modem on the side next to printer. I just want piece and quite again thats why I bought a Mac. My pc windows 7 never did this and my laptop never did this either never saw anything like this until I got my very first Mac. Little upset with Apple support they are useless and did not even offer me a new one when I went back a week later they were very rude to me I paid $1299.00 for nosey machine and no help.I am a very frustrated Mac user and thats why I do not own a Apple phone I like Android much better and cheaper than Apple products and from what I have read about the new phone software being so bad even with the updates that another reason I will never have a iPhone. So any help with my fan will be a great help sorry for venting on here.I do apologize for that but need to vent as my fan is driving me nuts. Thank you all

Do you know of any free ones that I can keep that are good?
In a word no. I keep hoping for better low price offerings in the App store, but Marcel Bresink eschews the App Store and the relatively cheap temperature reporting apps I have found there do not report fan speed which in your case, and I suspect many, is critical. Be aware that due to manufacturing tolerances some fans are simply noisier than others.
For what it is worth the fan in my late 2012 Mac mini is currently spinning at around 4,700 RPM and I all I can here is a faint sound of moving air. I get more noise from the fan in my external HD/optical drive enclosure when burning a CD/DVD which of course generates a lot of heat.

- Hi,
I have a Mac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010)
Processor: 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3,
Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3,
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB,
Running Yosemite 10.10.1
The fan is constantly running quite loud. I have never had this problem until recently and it seems to have started doing it for no apparent reason. I have changed any settings or done anything recently. In fact, the most recent change was upgrading to Yosemite.
I have tried doing a SMC reset (several times) which didn't change anything. I have tried lots of doing different ways of doing a Apple Hardware/Diagnostics Test and it told me that 'The Apple Hardware Test is not compatible with this machine'.
I have kept a close look at my Activity Monitor and nothing is spiking, average use is: System 2.75%, User 5.67%, Idle 90.4%
Using smcFanControl I know the fan is running at 29C and average 996rpm. I don't know if those stats are normal or not, but my fan is still making more noise than it ever has.
Please, can somebody help! I have been trying for weeks now with no success. I very worried that using my Mac is going to damage something and I desperately need it for work. Can anybody suggest anything outside of taking it to apple because that is my last resort which is going to cost me a lot of money
Thank you in advance for your helpThe fans always run, that's normal. What's not normal is that you hear them as much as you do unless you use your imac in an EXTREMELY quiet environment. I think that 996rpm is actually lower than normal, you shouldn't hear that at all. Maybe you have a fan that's starting to fail and is making abnormal noise.
Running the Apple Hardware Test on your mac requires the original gray install discs that came with the computer when it was new, do you have those? AHT is on disc two, insert it and hold D at start up and AHT will start. - After replacing the upper CPU on a Power Mac G5 (June 2004), Dual 1.8Ghz PowerPC, model M9454LL/A, all the cooling fans constantly run at full speed. All other operations are normal.
I've read, '...after replacing or switching CPU locations the Logic Board doesn't properly recognize the CPU's in their new location and a 'Thermal Calibration' is needed'. Could a 'Thermal Calibration' possibly correct the constant full fan speed issue?
What software would be required?Hi-

Yes.

I have tried resetting the SMC and that didn't help.
I also recently had to insert a new hard drive instead of the old one that failed. I am thinking that either the SSD is just hotter than the old hard drive, or that the hard drive sensor is somehow inverted in the plug. Is there any way of testing the hard drive sensor to see if that is faulty, or to test the fan. When I look at the Activity Monitor the system is 87% idle...Although you don't mention which imac you have since 2009 Apple has used hard drives with the temp sensor built in. When replacing one of these late model drives you have to use the same type hard drive or you get fans running all the time because the temp sensor isn't detected. You might want to try some third party software such as iStat Menus, SMC Fan Control or HDD a Fan Control. Google them for reviews. - My mid-2012 MacBook Pro has the fan constantly running. MACBOOK PRO 2009, 750GB HD, 8GB RAM - I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) connected to a Thunderbolt display running OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.2. I am using Photoshop CS5 Extended Version 12.0.4 x64.
About 3 weeks ago when I opened a file and tried to move it up to the Thunderbolt display to enlarge it and make it easier to work on, it disappeared. This had never happened before. Now all PS files behave this way.
This doesn’t happen with any other apps on the computer including all the other Adobe apps I use.
[email protected]I have similar problem Thunderbolt Display, Yosemite 10.10.2, but Photoshop CC 2014. sometimes I can quit PS and then it will work - or if I launch PS from the toolbar on the TB display, but today I can literally drag it from my Laptop where the file is visible to my TB display and the image disappears. I've even relaunched PS with all the preferences reset and that got it to work one time that it happened but I've only had the computer and PS for 2 weeks so its not like that much could have changed or gotten messed up in that time right? did you find any solutions? - PLEASE CAN YOU ADVISE:

5.37 GB Page-ins
197 MB Page-outsGiven the circumstances I agree taking it to an Apple Store might be the best way to address the problems with it. Manually eradicating all the software contributing to its unacceptable performance will be time-consuming and tedious. If it were mine there is no question I'd erase it and reconfigure it from the ground up. That would be less time-consuming and more likely to be successful, but it's also tedious.
And I do agree with a previous respondent that he could use some more RAM.
So do I. 2 GB is the absolute minimum for Yosemite to even run, and it won't run well with that little. That Mac can address as much as 6 GB, which would probably be acceptable if you were to reconfigure it and leave out the garbage software causing and / or contributing to poor performance.
Lastly, you have to evaluate how much time and money you are willing to spend on a Mac that's nearly eight years old. Age itself doesn't kill Macs, but eight years is about as much economic life that can be expected from any computer. Among the limitations that cannot be overcome are its Core 2 Duo CPU and RAM. Even 6 GB memory isn't all that much any more.
Having said that, even a brand new fully configured top of the line Mac Pro would run poorly, if at all, given the software that's on your Dad's Mac. Intego, Norton/Symantec, MacKeeper, Cocktail... all that stuff is utter garbage and there is too much of it to mention. Personal testing of Intego alone on a brand new Mac containing nothing other than one minimally configured user account resulted in performance degradation so extreme no knowledgeable Mac user would consider it acceptable.
For reference, here is the procedure I would recommend:
Back up your Mac if you have not already done so. To learn how to do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac. You will need a suitable external hard disk drive for this purpose. One with adequate capacity can be purchased for about $60.
The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select 'Applications', 'Computer and Network Settings' or 'Other files and folders'. De-select those choices.
Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
Always obtain software from authorized sources such as the Mac App Store, original installation media (CD or DVD), or from the developer's authorized download source. Never obtain software from download aggregator websites such as C net dot com, Mac Update dot com, Soft onic dot com, random popups that may appear while browsing the Internet, or other sources that primarily rely upon junk product advertisements for their revenue. Such sites are not to be trusted, and are the most common means of distributing adware or other junk you probably do not want.
To erase and install Yosemite read: OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X
To migrate your essential documents read: OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device and follow the procedure under Transfer info from a Time Machine backup or other storage device. - Does anyone know what might cause the fan on my mac to run constantly? As soon as I turn it on and the unit is clearly not warm yet, the fan is going. If your iMac has an Intel processor, reset the SMC:
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Apple says that should fix a fan that runs regardless of systems load. If that doesn't fix it, please post back. - The fans on my MacBook pro are constantly running. This morning I turned it on and they started up within the first 5-1o minutes of using the machine.
Has anyone else had problems with this? I have two other co-workers who are doing the same amount of activity I'm doing and we have the same exact hardware set up, but they aren't having any problems.
Help!
Thanks!Have you been monitering Activity Monitor as I suggested to see if an application is causing the problem?
I would also suggest using a utility such as TinkerTool System to erase system, user, and font caches in case the problem is caused by a corrupted cache file. Restart after clearing caches. Also use the utility to run the Unix maintenance scripts. See the following for more on maintenance:
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an 'archiving' utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

It also can't hurt to do this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X. - Hi guys,
hope somebody can help me, my iMac suddenly started to make a very loud noise, the fans are spinning at high RPM!
I already tried to reset the SMC, unplugged my Mac for a couple of hours, plugged it in while pressing the power button - unfortunately nothing helped. When starting while holding the power button, it gets even noisier, therefore i expect only one of the fans is running at full or near full speed constantly.
I now tried to install some hardware monitors to check on temperature/fan speed. iStat nano is reporting low temperatures, but the strange thing is that it gives 0 rpm for the CPU fan, even though its clearly running at high revs...
I don't have Apple care and my iMac 24' is now roughly two years old. Any help is highly appreciated!
thanks,
ATry doing a SMC AND PRAM reset by:
1. Turn off your iMac and unplug everything from it for 30 seconds.
2. Plug in the power cord, keyboard and mouse only.
3. Press the power button and immediately hold down the Option, Command, P & R keys until you hear the second gong then release the keys. Your machine will start up normally, then check for the issues you are having. - my fan on my macbook pro is constantly running today? any answer as to whyHi Julian,
MBPs run very warm. The fans run to cool the CPU etc. The warmer it gets on the outside, the harder it is to keep the inside cool. There can also be issues causing the MBP to run warmer than usual. - My fans currently run on high constantly. I tried the SMC reset (both unpluging the machine and reset button) and the fans are still going. Is there a fan calibration or something else is wrong? I had my Mac tech install more RAM and a week later this happened. Not sure if this is in relation with that.
According to iStat:

Message was edited by: JTA411That is what iStat was saying. I could have cooked a pizza if it was truly that hot. Fortunately the SMC just needed a reset. Not sure who writes those fix it help pages but disconnecting everything for 15 seconds didn't work. Perhaps they meant 15 minutes? - Since uploading Windows 10 the fan now runs constantly and pretty hot too. I have it propped up to allow air underneath but makes no difference. Is this a coincidence (since uploading Windows 10) or is there a problem with the laptop?Hi , Welcome to the HP Forums! It is a fantastic place to find answers and suggestions!
For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide. Learn How to Post and More I grasp that after updating to Windows 10 the fan runs constantly and the notebook get very warm. Here is a link to HP Notebook PCs - Fan is Noisy and Spins Constantly, PC is Warmer than Normal that should help. Have you done all your Windows updates? Here is a link to Open the Windows Update troubleshooter that may help find additional drivers. Although it lists Windows 7 it does work in Windows 10. Once launched, it should show a screen like this. Use the second option 'Background Intelligent Transfer Service', it should lead to a force update of 'Windows Updates' that may not be automatically being applied, that could fix some of these issues. Should you require a bios update here is a document to assist you.HP Notebook PCs - Updating the BIOS As updating the bios does have a potential to cause damage, I suggest contacting HP support for assistance. Please contact HP support at Contact HP SupportAnother one that may help is HP Notebook PCs - Reducing Heat Inside the PC to Prevent Overheating.
